Kitchen duty.

The soldiers responsible for preparing hot meals were as essential to an army's effectiveness as the men serving on the front line. Throughout military history, a well-fed soldier has been just as dependent on a reliable supply of food as on ammunition, making field cooks and supply personnel indispensable members of every unit.

In this photograph, the cooks pose beside a Hungarian mobile field kitchen mounted on the back of a truck. These mobile kitchens enabled hot meals to be prepared and distributed even under field conditions, providing nourishment and a welcome sense of normality to soldiers serving far from permanent facilities.

Although they rarely received the same recognition as combat troops, military cooks played a vital role in sustaining morale and maintaining the health and fighting efficiency of their units.

This photograph pays tribute to the men behind the field kitchens, whose hard work ensured that their fellow soldiers received one of the most important necessities of military life—a hot meal.
