 The accident in the fog

Not every wartime loss was the result of enemy action. Accidents were an unavoidable part of military service, claiming both equipment and lives under circumstances that could be just as tragic as those encountered in combat.

This photograph documents the wreck of a German-built Fieseler Fi 156 Storch, a light reconnaissance and liaison aircraft of the Royal Hungarian Air Force bearing the call sign R-108. In November 1942, the aircraft crashed in dense fog while operating from the Hungarian military airfield at Ilovskoje on the Eastern Front.

The Fieseler Fi 156 Storch was renowned for its exceptional short take-off and landing performance, making it ideally suited for reconnaissance, artillery observation, communications, and casualty evacuation. However, even an aircraft with such remarkable handling characteristics could fall victim to adverse weather conditions, particularly on the improvised airfields of the Soviet front.

This photograph is a reminder that the dangers of military aviation extended far beyond enemy fire. Poor weather, mechanical failures, and operational hazards claimed many aircraft and airmen throughout the war, making accidents an inevitable part of wartime flying.

The loss was total and the machine had to be scrapped.
