A platoon of Hungarian border guard soldiers poses for a group photograph, with the platoon leaders and their sergeant standing in the front row. Formal group portraits such as this were a common way of recording military service and preserving the memory of a unit and its personnel.
Unfortunately, this small 4.5 × 6 cm photograph has suffered damage to one corner, and no accompanying information has survived to identify the year, unit, or location where it was taken. Despite the lack of documentation, the soldiers' uniforms provide valuable clues. They are wearing the light-colored 1940-pattern summer tunics, allowing the photograph to be dated with reasonable confidence to the early years of the Second World War.
Although its exact origin remains unknown, the photograph offers a valuable record of Hungary's border guard troops and illustrates how even the smallest and most modest photographs can preserve details of military history that might otherwise have been lost.
