Határvadász corporal
A Határvadász (Frontier Guard) corporal poses for a formal portrait wearing the 1940 Return of Transylvania Commemorative Medal. The decoration indicates his participation in, or service connected with, the reoccupation of Northern Transylvania following the Second Vienna Award of 1940.
As a corporal, he belonged to the junior non-commissioned officer corps, carrying responsibility for the leadership, discipline, and training of the soldiers under his command. Within the Határvadász formations, corporals played an essential role in the day-to-day duties of border security while also leading their men during field operations and military exercises.
The Határvadász units formed an important part of the Royal Hungarian Army, combining the responsibilities of frontier defence with those of light infantry. The Return of Transylvania Commemorative Medal served as a lasting reminder of one of the most significant territorial changes in Hungary during the interwar period, and many members of the Frontier Guard took part in the operation.
Although the identity of this corporal has been lost to history, his portrait preserves the image of a soldier whose service was marked by an important chapter in Hungary's twentieth-century military history. The medal on his chest remains a silent testament to his participation in those events.
