Hungarian Labour Service (Munkaszolgálat)

Original photographs, documents and personal histories documenting Hungary's wartime Labour Service system

Historical Background

The Hungarian Labour Service system (Munkaszolgálat) formed a distinctive part of Hungary's military organisation during the Second World War. Introduced as an alternative form of military service for individuals who were not accepted into regular armed service under contemporary legislation, Labour Service units carried out a wide range of military support duties.

Labour servicemen were employed in road construction, engineering projects, railway maintenance, logistics, fortification work and supply operations both within Hungary and on the Eastern Front. Although officially non-combat formations, many units served in operational areas and experienced the same dangers, hardships and losses as frontline troops.

The surviving photographs, identity documents, personal albums and official records preserved within the TŰZKERESZT Archive provide valuable historical evidence of everyday service, military organisation and the personal experiences of those who served in Labour Service units.
