Hungarian Military History During the Great War
The Great War
The First World War transformed Europe and profoundly shaped the future of Hungary. Millions of men from every region of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy served on battlefields stretching from Galicia and the Carpathians to the Italian Front and the Balkans.
Hungarian officers and soldiers served in both the Imperial and Royal Army (K.u.K.) and the Royal Hungarian Honvéd, participating in campaigns that would ultimately lead to the collapse of the Dual Monarchy in 1918.
The TŰZKERESZT Archive preserves original wartime photographs, officer portraits, field correspondence, military decorations, regimental histories and family collections documenting the experiences of Hungarian servicemen throughout the Great War.
