Built upon more than thirty years of collecting, research, preservation and historical documentation.

The Story Behind the Archive

What began as a personal interest in Hungarian military history gradually developed into one of the largest privately assembled collections of original Hungarian military photographs and documents.

For more than thirty years, the archive has grown through acquisitions from veterans' families, private estates, collectors, auctions and historical sources. Every collection is preserved together with its historical context whenever possible.

Today the archive preserves more than 150,000 original photographs, negatives, documents and historical artifacts connected to Hungarian and Austro-Hungarian military history.

Increasingly, the work has expanded beyond collecting into historical research. Through archival investigation, provenance research and the identification of people and places, anonymous photographs have been reconnected with the individuals and events they document.

Scope of the Collection

The archive covers the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the First World War, the Interwar Period, the Royal Hungarian Army and Hungary's participation in the Second World War. Special emphasis is placed on original wartime photography, military decorations, personal histories and unpublished archival material.

Research Philosophy

Research Philosophy Research within the TŰZKERESZT Archive begins with the original artifact.

Whenever possible, photographs are connected to archival documents, contemporary newspapers, military records and surviving historical sources. The objective is not simply to preserve images, but to restore their historical context and the identities of the people they portray.

Research & Contributions

Over the years, material from the archive has contributed to exhibitions, publications, book projects, historical research and documentary work.

Authors, collectors, museums, historians and researchers have frequently turned to the archive for assistance with identification, verification, source material and photographic documentation.

The archive has also provided photographs and research material for books, articles, exhibitions and historical publications in Hungary and abroad.

Recent research projects have demonstrated how unidentified photographic collections can be reconstructed into documented historical narratives through archival research, image analysis and contemporary newspaper sources.
