Eastern Front – Hungary in the Second World War
Hungary at War
Between 1941 and 1945, hundreds of thousands of Hungarian soldiers served on the Eastern Front. Their experiences ranged from the advance through the Carpathians and Ukraine to the devastating battles along the River Don, the long retreat across Eastern Europe and the final defensive campaigns fought on Hungarian soil.
The Eastern Front became the defining military experience of an entire generation of Hungarian officers and soldiers. It also produced one of the largest surviving bodies of original wartime photography preserved within the TŰZKERESZT Archive.
This section brings together original photographs, personal albums, military documents, veterans' recollections and historical research documenting Hungarian participation in the war against the Soviet Union.
