To my great surprise, today's mixed lot of photographs contained this wonderful portrait of Archduke Joseph August of Austria. Discoveries like this are among the great rewards of collecting historical photographs, as remarkable images often appear where they are least expected.
Archduke Joseph August (1872–1962) was one of the most distinguished Hungarian members of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. A respected military commander during the First World War, he served on several fronts and later became one of Hungary's most prominent public figures during the turbulent years following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. His popularity among both soldiers and civilians made him one of the best-known personalities of his generation.
Finding an original photograph of the Archduke among an otherwise unrelated collection is a reminder that every forgotten envelope or photograph album may still hold an unexpected historical treasure.
