I recently acquired a photographic collection containing a remarkable series of images documenting the retreat of the Royal Hungarian Army during 1944–1945 and the final months of the Second World War. The collection includes a number of exceptionally rare photographs that capture this dramatic period with an unusual degree of detail and emotion.
Over the coming months, I hope to share many of these images here on Tűzkereszt History as I continue the careful process of scanning, preserving, and researching the collection.
The photograph above was taken somewhere in the mountains of Transylvania as a Hungarian Border Guard (Határvadász) regiment withdrew toward Hungary during the autumn of 1944. Like countless soldiers on the Eastern Front during the final stages of the war, these men faced an increasingly difficult retreat through rugged terrain under rapidly changing military conditions.
Photographs from the last months of the war are comparatively uncommon, particularly those taken privately by the soldiers themselves. This collection offers a rare and deeply personal glimpse into one of the most dramatic and decisive chapters in Hungary's twentieth-century history.
