Royal Hungarian River Guard

Portrait of a private serving in the Royal Hungarian River Guard. Responsible for safeguarding Hungary's inland waterways, the River Guard performed patrol, security, and border-control duties along the country's major rivers, particularly the Danube.

The soldier is wearing the 1941 Return of Délvidék Campaign Medal, awarded to military personnel and others who participated in or contributed to the reoccupation of territories in the Délvidék region during the April 1941 campaign. The decoration commemorated their service during this operation and became one of several Hungarian campaign medals instituted during the period.

This portrait preserves the image of a River Guard private whose service reflects both the specialized role of Hungary's river forces and a significant chapter in the country's military history during the Second World War.
