Fiat CR 42
Two photographs document the wreck of a crashed Fiat CR.42 biplane fighter of the Royal Hungarian Air Force. Although the circumstances of the accident are unknown, such photographs were often taken to record aircraft losses, training accidents, or operational incidents.
The Italian-built Fiat CR.42 Falco ("Falcon") was one of the last biplane fighters to see widespread military service. Operated by the Royal Hungarian Air Force, it was employed both as a frontline fighter during the early years of the Second World War and later as an advanced trainer as more modern monoplane fighters entered service. Despite its seemingly outdated biplane design, the CR.42 was highly maneuverable, robust, and well regarded by its pilots.
These photographs preserve the remains of an aircraft that played an important role in Hungarian military aviation, serving in both combat and training before gradually giving way to a new generation of fighter aircraft.
