Waiting for the steak...

Soldiers prepare meat in the field during a break in their duties. Procuring, preparing, and cooking food was an essential part of everyday military life, particularly when units were operating far from permanent supply bases or field kitchens.

This photograph captures one of the countless ordinary tasks that sustained soldiers during wartime. Beyond combat and military duties, daily life in the field revolved around practical necessities such as preparing meals, maintaining equipment, and making the best use of available resources.

Presented here in its original, unadjusted form, the photograph preserves the authentic appearance of the surviving print, with all of its original tonal qualities and imperfections.

Images such as this remind us that the history of war is also the history of everyday life, where even the simple act of preparing a meal became an important part of a soldier's routine.
