Posing with the gas-mask on.

One cannot help but wonder whether it was difficult to breathe with the gas mask's filter still sealed in its protective storage wrapping. Equally puzzling is the soldier standing in the background, who appears to be wearing only one boot.

Were these simply humorous moments staged for the camera, small oversights during a training exercise, or details that held an obvious explanation to the men present? We will probably never know.

Photographs like this often raise more questions than they answer. Long after the people who took and appeared in them are gone, the little mysteries they captured remain—small reminders that history is made up not only of great events, but also of ordinary moments whose stories have been lost to time.
