The Warrant Officer (Zászlós) standing in the center of the photograph is wearing the distinctive shoulder boards that were briefly introduced into the Royal Hungarian Army between 1940 and 1941. Their service life was remarkably short, as they were abolished after little more than a year.
The shoulder boards proved highly unpopular among Hungarian officers, who regarded them as being at odds with the long-established traditions of Hungarian military uniforms. In addition to their practical shortcomings, many officers preferred the traditional Hungarian system of rank insignia, making the experiment with shoulder boards one of the shortest-lived uniform changes in the army's history.
This photograph captures a rare transitional period in the evolution of Hungarian military dress, preserving a uniform feature that was worn for only a brief moment before disappearing once again from the Royal Hungarian Army.
