Documentary Sources
Military history is preserved not only through photographs, but also through the official documents that accompanied every soldier throughout his military career. Service books, promotion records, award recommendations, military passes and personal files together provide a detailed record of military service.
These documents frequently reveal dates, units, promotions, decorations, campaigns and personal information that cannot be established from photographs alone. When combined with original images, they allow military careers and personal histories to be reconstructed with a high degree of accuracy.
The TŰZKERESZT Archive preserves a growing collection of original documents from the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the Royal Hungarian Honvéd and the Second World War, providing valuable primary sources for historical research.

Historical Scope
The archive spans the military administration of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the Royal Hungarian Honvéd and later Hungarian armed forces from the late nineteenth century through the end of the Second World War.
Original certificates, correspondence, personnel records and administrative documents provide an important complement to the photographic archive, often allowing unidentified individuals and collections to be placed within their proper historical context.

Battlefield Commendation Awarded to Second Lieutenant Dr. Andor Tüske
An exceptionally rare illustrated battlefield commendation awarded to Second Lieutenant Dr. Andor Tüske for gallant conduct during the fighting along the Don River on 7 August 1942.
Issued by the Headquarters of the Royal Hungarian 1st Armoured Division, the document bears the original signature of Major General Lajos Veress and the official divisional seal.
