First Vienna Award
Historical Background
The First Vienna Award of 2 November 1938 marked the beginning of Hungary's territorial revision following the Treaty of Trianon. Through international arbitration by Germany and Italy, Hungary regained large areas of southern Slovakia and southern Carpathian Ruthenia, restoring territories with substantial Hungarian populations.
The reoccupation was carried out peacefully and became one of the defining national events of the interwar period. Hungarian troops entered the returned territories amid military parades, official ceremonies and public celebrations, while photographers and newsreel cameramen documented the historic occasion in remarkable detail.
The TŰZKERESZT Archive preserves original photographs, personal albums, military documents and historical research illustrating the return of the Royal Hungarian Honvéd, the welcoming ceremonies and the people who witnessed these events.
