Royal Hungarian Medical Corps
Historical Background
The Royal Hungarian Medical Corps (Honvéd Egészségügyi Szolgálat) was responsible for preserving the health and fighting capability of the Royal Hungarian Honvéd. Military physicians, surgeons, nurses, pharmacists and medical orderlies served in military hospitals, field dressing stations, evacuation units and frontline aid posts throughout the interwar period and the Second World War.
Medical personnel frequently worked under extremely demanding conditions, often close to active combat zones where rapid treatment and evacuation meant the difference between life and death. Their duties ranged from emergency surgery and disease prevention to long-term rehabilitation of wounded soldiers returning from the front.
Beyond military medicine, the Medical Corps also produced remarkable examples of humanitarian service. The work of Captain Dr. Ákos Osváth and his colleagues at Military Hospital No. 125 in Szombathely illustrates the ethical responsibilities carried by military physicians, whose commitment to saving lives often transcended the divisions of war.
The TŰZKERESZT Archive preserves original photographs, personal albums, military documents and research material documenting the hospitals, medical personnel and daily work of Hungary's military medical services.
