Northern Transylvania
Historical Background
The return of Northern Transylvania in September 1940 followed the Second Vienna Award and marked one of the most significant territorial revisions in modern Hungarian history. As units of the Royal Hungarian Honvéd crossed the new frontier, they were welcomed by large crowds, official ceremonies and widespread public celebrations throughout the region.
Although the reoccupation was carried out largely without major military resistance, it required the coordinated movement of infantry, cavalry, artillery and support units across a vast area. The operation became a powerful symbol of national unity and was extensively documented through photographs, newsreels and official publications.
The TŰZKERESZT Archive preserves original photographs, personal albums, military documents and historical research illustrating the ceremonial entries, soldiers, officers, local celebrations and public memory surrounding the return of Northern Transylvania in 1940.
