Order of Vitéz
Historical Background
The Order of Vitéz (Vitézi Rend) was established in 1920 by Regent Miklós Horthy as a national order of merit and hereditary honour for soldiers who had distinguished themselves through bravery and front-line service during the First World War. Closely connected to the military and social values of interwar Hungary, the order became one of the most recognizable institutions of the Horthy era.
Membership in the Order of Vitéz carried both symbolic and social significance. Recipients were granted the title vitéz, and the order played an important role in preserving the memory of wartime sacrifice, military achievement and national service after the Treaty of Trianon. Many members were former officers, non-commissioned officers and decorated soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian and Royal Hungarian armed forces.
The TŰZKERESZT Archive preserves original portraits, award documents, membership certificates, insignia, personal files and historical research relating to the Order of Vitéz and its role in Hungarian military and social history during the interwar period.
