Royal Hungarian River Forces
Historical Background
The Royal Hungarian River Forces (Magyar Királyi Honvéd Folyami Erők) protected Hungary's inland waterways and represented the country's naval arm throughout the interwar period and the Second World War. Operating primarily on the Danube and its tributaries, the River Forces combined centuries of riverine tradition with the technical demands of modern military operations.
Their responsibilities included river patrol, convoy escort, mine warfare, bridge protection, transport duties and support for ground operations. River monitors, patrol boats and auxiliary vessels formed an essential part of Hungary's defensive capabilities along the Danube, one of Central Europe's most important strategic waterways.
