Royal Hungarian Gendarmerie
Historical Background
The Royal Hungarian Gendarmerie (Magyar Királyi Csendőrség) was established in 1881 and developed into one of Hungary's most respected national institutions. Organised along military lines, the gendarmerie combined police responsibilities with military discipline, serving primarily in rural districts, border regions and smaller communities throughout the Kingdom of Hungary.
During the interwar period and the Second World War, the gendarmerie remained responsible for public order, criminal investigations, border security and support to the civil authorities. Its members became widely recognised for their distinctive uniforms, rigorous training and strong esprit de corps, making the organisation one of the most recognisable institutions in Hungarian history.
The TŰZKERESZT Archive preserves original photographs, personal albums, military documents and research material illustrating the officers, gendarmes, stations, equipment and daily service of the Royal Hungarian Gendarmerie.
