Hungarian Order Of Merit's Knights Cross

Hungarian Order of Merit, Knight's Cross with Swords, mounted on the red wartime ribbon. Instituted during the Horthy era, the Hungarian Order of Merit was among the nation's highest decorations, awarded in several classes to recognize outstanding military or civil service.

The crossed swords and the red war ribbon indicate that this Knight's Cross was awarded for meritorious military service connected with wartime conditions. Decorations bearing these distinctions recognized achievements performed while the nation was at war, distinguishing them from awards granted solely for peacetime or civilian service.

Also shown is the original presentation case, the lid of which bears the embossed silhouette of the Knight's Cross with its crossed swords. Such cases were produced specifically for the wartime version of the decoration and form an integral part of a complete award set, reflecting the high standards of craftsmanship associated with Hungarian state decorations.

Today, the Hungarian Order of Merit, Knight's Cross with Swords, remains one of the most prestigious and desirable decorations of the Royal Hungarian period. Together with its original fitted case, it represents an outstanding example of Hungarian phaleristics and the military honours awarded for distinguished wartime service.
