" Pozsony 1905 "
An Austro-Hungarian Second Lieutenant (Leutnant) poses in uniform wearing the Jubilee Medal of Emperor Franz Joseph I, issued to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of his reign from 1848 to 1898.
The Jubilee Medal was established in 1898 and awarded to military personnel, civil servants, and other individuals who had rendered loyal service to the Emperor and the Dual Monarchy. It became one of the most recognizable commemorative decorations of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was worn with pride by officers and officials throughout the monarchy.
The young officer's portrait reflects the appearance and traditions of the Imperial and Royal Army (Kaiserliche und Königliche Armee, or k.u.k. Army) during the final decades of the nineteenth century, a period when the Austro-Hungarian Empire stood as one of Europe's great powers under the long reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I.
This photograph preserves the image of a junior officer of the Imperial and Royal Army, proudly displaying a decoration that symbolized loyalty to one of the longest-reigning monarchs in European history.
