Royal Hungarian Cavalry
Historical Background
The Royal Hungarian Cavalry inherited a long tradition dating back to the hussars of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Although warfare became increasingly mechanized during the twentieth century, mounted formations continued to play an important role in reconnaissance, security operations, communications and mobile combat throughout the interwar years and the Second World War.
Hungarian cavalry brigades participated in the territorial revisions of 1938–1941 and later served on the Eastern Front, where horse-mounted units often operated under demanding conditions across vast distances. Their history reflects the transition from traditional cavalry warfare to the modern battlefield.
